The "purging" in this song does not only describe the subjects breached - which are terrible hammer blows to me within my particular life - but the song as a whole, itself haunted me for years. There wasn't much to it in my head. I have historically waited for virtual fragments of music to resolve themselves naturally, and take on lives of their own before I polish them off formally. This one remained stuck, like an unchanging loop in my head ... until I simply arranged and recorded it as it is. Short and bitter-sweet.
The reggae arrangement also danced in my head throughout the same period, and was sublimely related to the first part. I decided to finish the song off with it, lending an upbeat playful resolution to the heavy melancholy of the first part.
Once it was all out, and purged from my head, it haunted me no more.
lyrics
The Purge
For all the stupid things I've done
For my failure as a son
For my betrayals enwrapped in foul embraces
Choosing not to understand
